Casiokids
Norway - Moshi Moshi
Old analogue, trashy keyboards and pop melodies make up the Norwegian electro-troupe that is Casiokids. With tunes often sung in their native language and influenced by afro-beat, techno and out-and-out pop, the band draws similarities and takes inspiration from Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, Ivor Cutler, New Order, King Tubby, Bob Hund, Cornelius and Fela Kuti.
October 27 2008 saw the historic release of the first ever Norwegian language pop single in the UK. Since then the band have released two more extremely well received singles on Moshi Moshi with the latest, Finn bikkjen!/Gomurmamma, released on August 3rd 2009.
Since their creation in 2005, Casiokids have experienced everything from playing for hundreds of Norwegian youngsters on a 12-date kindergarten tour in Norway to promote their first album, to playing for more or less grown up indie and electro kids all over the world. They have also made a name for themselves as providers of sound installations and workshops, as well as DJs and have played numerous renowned festivals and venues in Europe and North America including Bestival (UK, 2009), Roskilde (Denmark, 2008), SXSW (Austin, Texas 2009), CMJ Music Marathon (New York City, 2008) The Great Escape Festival (Brighton, UK 2008), عa Festival (Norway 2006 & 2008), and Scandinavias biggest and best showcase festival, by:Larm (Stavanger 2005 & Oslo 2008) to name just a few.
Casiokids have been flying high — literally and figuratively — since releasing their singles collection (and Polyvinyl debut) Topp stemning pa lokal bar in the summer of 2010.
Shortly after the compilation hit stores in June, the group was hand-picked by fellow Norwegians a-ha as a potential recipient of one of four talent grants the band was offering. Casiokids eventually won the coveted prize through a popular vote, thereby affording them the opportunity to open for their famous countrymen on the group’s farewell tour last fall — a trek they promptly followed-up with a one-week North American tour sandwiched between festival appearances in England, Poland and Australia.
Then, in March, Casiokids found themselves nominated for a Spellemann Award (the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy) at the same time they were playing sold out shows across the U.S.And yet, amidst all of the seemingly constant jet setting and endless stream of accolades bestowed upon them, Casiokids managed to set aside an uninterrupted block of time to record a new album.
