Fatlip (Pharcyde)
USA
Fatlip left The Pharcyde (member of from 1990 to 1995) shortly after the release of their 1995 album, Labcabincalifornia, due to creative differences, personal problems, and the desire to start a solo career.
As a solo artist, Fatlip continued his innovative work with his loopy first single “What’s Up Fatlip” from Prime Cuts: Vol. 1, a collection of new songs and artists on the Delicious Vinyl label.
The carnival-esque groove complements Fatlip’s unique brand of self-deprecating hip-hop. In a genre where self-assurance and bravado are at a premium, “What’s Up Fatlip” stands out as a three-and-a-half-minute tribute to his endless shortcomings and insecurities. These themes should be at the center of his upcoming solo album, Revenge of the Nerd as Fatlip continues to make a name for himself in the world of underground hip-hop. — Jon Azpiri
As a member of The Pharcyde, the song“ Runnin” appeared in the 2002 film 8 Mile, and is featured on the More Music From 8 Mile soundtrack, their single “Drop” was directed by Spike Jonze and sampled for Portishead’s song “Only You”.
As a solo act, Fatlip has appeared on songs by many artists, such as The Chemical Brothers (on their song “The Salmon Dance -2007), Neon Neon (on the song “Luxury Pool (2008) on the two tracks “Hip Hop” (feat. KRS-One, Tre Hardson & Fatlip) and “Strange Enough” (feat. Karen O, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, & Fatlip) of Sam Spiegel (musician)‘s and DJ Zegon’s project N.A.S.A.‘s first album The Spirit of Apollo.
Fatlip has now taken up DJing in the last year and is already playing the club circuit in some of Hollywood’s top night spots as well as key DJ venues across the US, with a full European tour in 2012, this is only the start of a new Fatlip for the modern era.
